IMLA is committed to mentorship as a way of strengthening Indigenous representation in medicine and supporting the next generation of Indigenous physicians. One of our key initiatives is the annual Come Walk in Our Moccasins Mini Medical School Day, which invites Indigenous students from across Canada to experience a day in the life of a medical student. Participants attend a lecture, work through a simulated patient case, tour the cadaveric anatomy lab, and practice hands-on clinical skills such as suturing and casting. Many current Indigenous medical students once attended this event themselves, making it a meaningful introduction to the medical school journey.

For students interested in learning more about the medical school application process, IMLA also supports mentorship modules led by the Indigenous Mentorship Lead, Dr. Alex Petiquan, which guide learners through key components of applying to medicine. For applicants who receive an interview, the Indigenous Ambassador Program pairs interviewees with current Indigenous medical students for support and guidance throughout the interview process. IMLA also offers informal one-on-one mentorship for learners with questions at any stage. Please contact us to learn more or get connected.

Mentorship

"Attending the Come Walk in Our Moccasins Mini Medical School strengthened my confidence as a future Inuk applicant to the MD program. It was inspiring to hear relatable stories and lived experiences, and above all, the words of encouragement from the Indigenous medical students."

- Paula Onalik, Mini Med Participant, 2026
