The Policy and Advocacy Pillar works to strengthen the Indigenous medical student experience through institutional policy support and community-based advocacy. This pillar helps advise on university-level decisions that impact Indigenous learners, with a focus on improving access, inclusion, and culturally safe learning environments. One current area of work includes advocating for the expansion of Indigenous learning sites and clinical opportunities that better reflect the needs and realities of Indigenous communities. Another area of work is developing Indigenous leadership electives within medical institutions.
In addition to policy-focused efforts, the pillar supports advocacy initiatives in collaboration with the Indigenous Medical Program, helping to organize and promote events that foster awareness, reflection, and community engagement. This includes supporting annual initiatives such as Orange Shirt Day, Red Dress Day, and other important cultural and advocacy events that contribute to meaningful dialogue and action within and beyond the faculty.
